Improving test taking and studying skills
Parents, have you ever wondered how to help your
child get organized or study for a test?
Students, do you ever get nervous about taking a
test? Have you ever wished you could take notes like the person
sitting next to you? What if you could make studying a little
easier?
The following sites contain valuable information
for parents and students regarding study skills, test-taking
advice, writing guidelines, and study guides for various subject
areas. Suppose tomorrow is test day and maybe you’ve forgotten
why Romeo and Juliet’s families are enemies, or perhaps you need
to know the causes of the Civil War. The sites below contain
information on almost anything you can think of that you need to
know in middle and high school. Gearing up for the SATs? No
problem. Find the blurb that contains the topic of your
interest, follow the links, and find the information you need.
Study Skills Options:
High School Ace—This site contains links to study guides
for all academic areas including SAT prep. A very useful
tool for students in middle and high school.
Teachers and Families—A website specifically about how
parents can enhance study skills and motivate their
children. This site explains how parents can help their
children with homework and studying. There is also a
section on how to keep students organized.
College Board/SAT/AP—This commonly-known and widely-used
website has information for high school and beyond. It
covers the basics of what students should be doing
throughout each year of high school to prepare for college,
how to improve study skills, as well as what advanced
courses students can opt to take. The site is regularly
updated and includes many general topics of concern such as
how to balance high school schedules with part time jobs.
Test Taking Tips—A site specifically geared for
improving test-taking, it breaks down into categories of
advice for each type of test (multiple choice, short answer,
etc) as well as note-taking and test-taking anxiety tips.
New York State Regents Prep—The official New York State
Regents website contains previous Regents exams for study
purposes as well as the Regents exam schedules.
Oswego Regents Prep—Oswego City School’s online Regents
assistance website geared toward all academic areas.
Students can find writing advice and study guides for
various courses.
NY Special Education Department Resources—This NYS link
contains information regarding AIS as well as many other NYS
educational resources and requirements.
Public Television's Regents Review—The PBS schedule of
on-air Regents review shows helps students revisit course
content on television leading up to the Regents exam. Shows
from previous years can be found and viewed online.
Adprima Study Skills—This website focuses on improving
reading skills, along with study skills. It offers options
to purchase software, however the free reading information
on the site is suitable for any student.
