October 2007
Over the past week or so, there has been a
dramatic increase in the number of stories about a new, more
dangerous strain of Staphylococcus aureus (commonly called staph)
infections which is affecting schools nationwide. Obviously, we
want to take steps to ensure that our students are safe, as we
are all too aware of how easily an infectious disease can spread
in a school district.
We are taking steps to address this, and we want
you to know some of the things you can do as well at home.
Warning your children to remember to wash their hands often
using sanitizers or warm water and soap, not sharing clothing,
hats, food, etc., will assist in reducing their chances of
infection.
At school, we are also taking precautions. Areas
that have large communal opportunities for infections to spread,
such as locker rooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias are going to be
cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom this weekend. We have
asked all of the students to bring home their clothes, sneakers,
and other items, to better enable us to clean. All lockers will
be emptied and cleaned. We are not able to guarantee the items
left will be available after this cleaning.
We appreciate the assistance we can receive from
all of you to help protect your children. Thank you.
Dr.
James Hoffman
Superintendent
