paperwork now or you should sign up in the nurses’ office to get
a physical when Dr. Glenn comes in May/June. Dr Glenn will be in
twice in May and again in early June.

District to participate in Education Department weight/health
survey—survey includes only grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10
As part of a required school health examination, a student is
weighed and his/her height is measured. These numbers are used
to figure out the student’s body mass index or ‘BMI’. The BMI
helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a
healthy range or is too high or too low.
Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that
BMI and weight status group be included as part of the student’s
school health examination. Fonda-Fultonville Central School
District is taking part in a survey being pilot-tested by the
New York State Department of Health. As part of the survey, we
will be reporting to the New York State Department of Health
information about our students’ weight status groups. Only
summary information is sent. No names and no information about
individual students are sent.
You may choose to have your grade K, 2, 4, 7 or 10 child’s
information excluded from this survey report by completing an
exemption form and returning it to Dr. Constance Spohn,
Director of Special Programs at the address listed on the form.
All exemptions must be submitted by April 10th.
Burton and Wemple Scholarship creates buzz in region—and
opportunity for F-FHS grads
By now, virtually everyone in the Fonda-Fultonville School
District has heard about the newly established Burton and Wemple
Scholarship. In fact, people throughout the region know about
Mr. and Mrs. Wemple's extraordinary gift and the resulting
scholarship from widespread newspaper, television and radio
coverage.
What makes this story so intriguing is that the Wemples passed
away over 30 years ago. For much of their lives, they published
a weekly newspaper, the Mohawk Valley Democrat, in what is now
the NAPA Auto Parts store on the corner of East Main St. and
South Center St. in Fonda. Only upon the death of their last
descendent, was their $1.83 million bequest made known to the
school district. The gift was totally unexpected.
The challenge then fell to the district to establish a
foundation to invest the funds and to distribute them to
students according to the conditions of the Wemples' will. The
will stipulates that the funds be distributed to an equal number
of boys and girls who who are continuing on demonstrate
financial need. FFCS officials came up with a unique plan to tie
the value of the scholarship to the cost of getting an associate
degree from Fulton-Montgomery Community College. As those costs
change, the amount of the award will change.
According to Superintendent Dr. James Hoffman, students need at
least an associate degree in today's job market. This
scholarship assures that finances will not prevent capable
students from continuing their education whether at college or
an accredited trade school.
Scholarship packets which include instructions, student
application and parent financial forms are available online
and in the
high school guidance office. (read
more about the scholarship)

Nearly 50 students and staff members turned out
on Wednesday, March 19 for the high school's annual spring blood
drive.
Joe Horning of the American Red Cross reports
that "We came very close to reaching goal yesterday, collecting
42 units of whole blood and six units of double red cells for a
total of 48 productive units. Equally impressive, 33 new donors
gave blood!"
A fall blood drive is tentatively scheduled for
October 7th, 2008, so keep up your iron and get ready to roll up

Congrats to our high school and Student

to Oppenheim-Ephratah's Music Department who raised $730.
"What a great team effort—the homerooms were
fantastic!" says Student Government advisor Mrs. Petterson.
Winning the cookies and milk are Ms. J. Smitih, Ms. Razics, and
Mr. Hogan.
Other area schools included Scotia-Glenville $450, St. Mary's
Institute
$154, Tamarac $146, Draper $134, Germantown $105, and

The Cinderella Project—Do you know a girl in
need?
The Cinderella Project of the Capital Region helps girls in
grades 10 -12 who are in financial need attend their prom in
style. Gowns and accessories have been donated by local bridal
shops and community members and are provided free of charge. All
of the gowns are brand new or nearly new, and are all current
styles that any girl will be proud to wear to her prom. This
year’s fourth annual Boutique Day will be held at Siena College
on Saturday, March 29th.
The Cinderella Project does not need to know the financial
circumstances of the student and relies on the referring party
to determine if the student qualifies. Students can be nominated
by themselves or their parents, teachers, school staff,
community organizations, and class advisors; the actual referral
to attend the Boutique Day must be made by the guidance
department. No walk-ins will be accepted. If necessary,
transportation arrangements can be made.
The student MUST be referred by Wednesday, March 12th
in order to attend the Boutique day.

On
a "roll" with Christopher Johnson
For most kids, roller skating is something their
grandparents did years ago. For Fonda-Fultonville's Christopher
Johnson, roller skating is a vibrant sport—and much more.
Christopher and his partner Rachel Peck placed second in the
Freshman A Team Dance competition at the 2007 U.S. Figure
Skating Championships held this summer in Omaha, Neb. To reach
this level, Christopher works out at Rollarama Skating Center in
Schenectady every weekday morning and travels to Lynwood, Ill.
every other week to work with Rachael. In addition to skating,
he is an FFCS honor roll student and plays trombone in the band.
SADD gives students "food for thought"
During a recent lunch period in the high school
cafeteria, it was not your normal, run-of-the-mill lunch. This lunch
came with some extraordinary entertainment.
The members of Students Against Destructive
Decisions (SADD) presented a video that they had created to help
educate their peers about driving safely.
The nine-minute presentation was comprised of a
series of Public Service Announcements (PSA) edited together. The
PSA’s gave the students food for thought about the consequences of
drowsy driving, drunk driving, drug driving, talking on a cell phone
while driving, speed contests and other reckless acts.
SADD presented the video to Dave Halloran for his
input prior to showing it to the student body. After viewing the
presentation, he said, “I think this is good. It is right on target
for what our kids should be thinking about when they get behind the
wheel of a car.”
