TEAM MOHAWK HOMEWORK

Welcome to Mr. Thompson's classroom.  Students who come to my classroom must always have a pen or pencil, their folder (with the materials of the most recent unit inside), and their writing journals.

Students are currently finishing a Study Skills unit that focused on test questions and how to create them.  They finished the unit by watching a movie called Cool Runnings and writing an essay about what it means to be a hero and who is a hero to them.  They had to include characters from the film in their essay.

The following are the units we will be working on from Feb. until June.  Units and Dates are subject to change.

Schedule of Units: February - June 2009

  •  Power Point Project - Students will be comparing either two states or two former Presidents of the United States.  They are working in pairs.  Once they have found their research, they will put together a power point presentation for the class.  They will be using text sources as well as the following website sources:

  • Character Education -- Feb/March 2009 - Includes stories involving different character traits, performing character skits, and watching The War.  The film will be used as part of an essay assignment on character traits seen both in the film and used by students in real life.

  • Picture Book Unit -- March/April 2009 -- Students will be looking at various genres of picture books, including historical fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, science fiction, humorous fiction, and more.  They will also compare three classic picture books on a comparison chart.  The final project of the unit will be to write and draw a picture book on their own or with a partner.  Final Project is due Wed. April 22!

  • Newspaper Unit -- April 2009 - This unit looks at the different parts of the newspaper.  Students will have to be responsible for newspaper vocabulary as well as write movie reviews, sports articles, editorials (persuasive writing), etc.

  • Joey Pigza Loses Control - May 2009 - We will be reading a novel in class, going through discussion questions and learning the vocabulary.  Each day, I choose a Reader Leader to lead the class in reading.

  • Demonstration Project - May/June 2009 - A project in which students become the teacher and teach how to do something in front of the class (taking care of animals, playing instruments, riding a horse, doing a magic trick, making smoothies, etc.).  They must present in steps.

  • Grammar Review/School Island -- Final Exam in June

We will be reading JOEY PIGZA LOSES CONTROL in April/May.  The novel is a sequel to the Jack Gantos novel JOEY PIGZA SWALLOWED THE KEY.  I will be choosing a dfferent reader leader each day who in turn chooses other students to read aloud.  Our focus will be on vocabulary, characterization, sequence of events, and themes.  The genre is realistic fiction.

More information on the units and projects coming soon!!!! Stay Tuned!!!!
